24 Frames a Day

"When you sit with a nice girl for two hours you think it’s only a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute you think it’s two hours. That’s relativity." - Albert Einstein

24 Frames a Day is a project that explores the perception of time through the medium of film. Using Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A space odyssey' time is slowed down to a halt. The project consists of a webpage that plays back 2001 at 24 frames per day, instead of the cinematic speed of 24 frames per second. At this speed, the movie would last for more than 23 years. Each frame is turned into a time-limited edition, only visible for an hour each. Once a frame has played, it will never be visible again.

Playback (virtually) started on April 26, 2001. This is the moment in 2001 when the TMA-1 monolith emitted a radio pulse towards Jupiter that the Discovery 1 spaceship is sent to investigate, eventually leading to the movies' conclusion. The current frame number is displayed on the bottom of the page. The last frame will be played on May 3, 2024.

The saying 'every frame a painting' is true for Kubrick movies, but in my opinion especially for 2001. Open this page on a screen in your house, and put it in a place you can enjoy it: 24frames.prototypeverything.com/
